Features

Our superfine lambswool rugby shawl sweater is inspired by the chunky woollen tops worn by rugby and American football players at the turn of the 20th century, a similar sport back then, with American football only having been spawned from its English parent, rugby, towards the end of the 19th century.

In line with the original version, our rugby shawl sweater features a shawl collar, providing comfort around the neck, a shorter body (which would have allowed for higher rise breeches that athletes would wear as bottoms, or in your case, higher rise jeans and trousers), and a boxier cut and wider shoulders for ease of movement and comfort. The ribbed cuffs and hem are chunky and knitted slightly longer, just like the original version. The longer ribbed cuffs can be turned back for a retro sporty look.

It is made with 100% superfine lambswool from Todd & Duncan's prestigious Lamaine collection, making this piece sumptuously thick, sturdy and extremely warm whilst being soft to the touch, thanks to it being the world's softest lambswool.

Highly versatile and designed to exude rakish charm, it is equally well suited over a shirt or t-shirt, and would go well either on its own as a casual outer piece, or worn under a long winter coat as a luxuriously soft and warm mid-layer.

Its unrivalled softness, durability and exceptional warmth will easily make this your most trusted companion for many winters to come.

Fit

  • This style fits true to size. We suggest taking your usual size. See size chart at the bottom of the page
  • Wider shoulder and more roomy in the chest and body than our crew neck and v neck sweaters to allow for ease of movement and layering
  • Shawl collar around the neck for warmth and comfort
  • Slightly shorter body in line with original rugby shawl sweaters which would make the sweater suitable for higher rise trousers

As Worn

Model wears size 40/M. He measures: chest circumference 38" (96.5cm); height 6"2 (188cm).

    Unrivalled Quality

We are confident in bringing you the world's finest knitwear because we only use the very best at every stage of manufacture:

Quality of fibre: 100% superfine lambswool of the highest quality, sourced from a special breed of South African sheep. Fibre diameter is c. 18.5 microns, making this the world's finest, softest lambswool (most lambswool averages 21 - 24 microns). Fibre length is c. 42mm - the longer staple length keeps the sweater in shape and avoids pilling

Quality of yarn: superfine lambswool yarn produced by spinners Todd & Duncan at their Loch Leven Mill in Kinross, Scotland, industry heavyweights who have been spinning yarn for 150 years - world renowned for their consistently high quality and strong yarns

Quality of knit: knitted, hand-finished and washed by fourth generation heritage knitwear specialists in Hawick, the Scottish Borders, a region whose expertise in the trade is without compare. Garments are knitted tightly to minimise gaps and to ensure longevity.

Quality of finish: there is a high degree of hand-finishing. The sweater is "fully-fashioned". This makes the garment more well fitted, much like a bespoke suit. Individual pieces of the sweater are “hand-linked” - a meticulous process by which each tiny knit-loop at the end of each piece of the sweater is linked together by hand, ensuring the seams are the straightest and strongest.

Quality of wash: the finished product is carefully washed in pure Scottish waters with the precise balance of minerals, so that the garment is given its famous soft handle without compromising the integrity of the fibres. Scottish knitwear may feel a little stiff to begin with but will soften naturally with age.

    Size Guide

The rugby shawl sweater fits true to size. We suggest taking your usual size. The measurements of the garment are set out below. To ensure you have the correct size, you may wish to take a measuring tape to one of your existing jumpers with the best fit and compare measurements. Measurements are approximate, but any variance is minimal and will not impact overall fit given that knitwear has stretch.

Measurements are in cm (the sleeve length includes the cuffs which are knitted slightly longer, to allow them to be turned back if desired):
