Article: Styling the Extra-Long Staple Cotton Coach Polo Shirt

Styling the Extra-Long Staple Cotton Coach Polo Shirt
The newest addition to the Colhay’s collection, our Extra-Long Staple Cotton Polo Shirt, has recently launched just in time for the sunshine and balmy June and July temperatures. Perfect for summer time, this made in Japan polo features mother of pearl buttons and is made from 100% extra-long staple cotton, in this instance a delicate and precise blend of Australian and Egyptian Giza cotton. Much like our knitwear, this cotton is produced using long fibres (hence the name) which result in a fabric that’s both soft and strong.
When it comes to production, we would never settle for second best and so, after much research, we chose a Japanese manufacturer who we knew would provide us with the unrivalled quality and level of precision we aspire to. This particular garment maker has been in operation for over 70 years and specialises in the classic sportswear arena, so it was a perfect fit.
Aside from the supreme quality and production of this polo, one of our favourite aspects is its incredible versatility. Wear it alone in the warm weather, or layer with other pieces when the autumn chill inevitably arrives a few months down the line. Formality does not dictate whether you can wear it either. It’s just as easy to throw on as a component of a holiday outfit as it is to wear with smart trousers and a jacket for the office. This truly is an all-rounder of the wardrobe.
We thought it might be helpful to our customers to make some styling suggestions for each colourway. Perhaps helping spark your imagination or illustrate how these polos could be easily styled with items you already own.
Coach Polo in Cream
We’re kicking off with the cream version. This warm off-white cream has a definite vintage feel and is not only easy to style, but also complements a variety of other shades. There’s no denying this colourway is the most summery, feeling very much suited to a holiday wardrobe, however, the refined, classic essence of a cream shirt lends itself perfectly to formal wear too.
Look 1:
Below we start with a relatively conservative outfit - we’ve paired the coach polo with a navy blazer, another versatile item we know many will already own, to create a formal office outfit that’s easy to replicate.
Looks 2 – 5 below feature our Tennis Polo in cream as opposed to our new Coach Polo, but, given the similarity of the colours of the two polo shirt styles, we thought the principles from our styling of the Tennis Polo demonstrate how our new Coach Polo could also be styled in terms of colour combinations.
Look 2:
You can see here that we’ve styled the cream polo with a pair of white jeans and a brown blazer. Again, an easy look to recreate. The cream and the brown together are a classic colour combination that’s both harmonious and refined. This is a reliable smart casual look that you can repeat time and again. The only thing we would say is that if you find the coach polo a little too white for white jeans, you can substitute the white jeans for a more tan pair - would work just as well.

Look 3:
Starting with the same general idea as above, we’ve swapped out the brown blazer for one that’s green. Another great smart casual outfit featuring easy on the eye colours.

Look 4:
If you’re thinking of holidaywear, this outfit lends itself to a day spent poolside or walking through sun-soaked city streets. On the lower half we’ve chosen lighter shorts and layered the polo shirt with either a cardigan or cricket sweater for a little extra interest and, with practicality in mind, for the peace of mind of knowing you won’t be caught out if the weather changes!

Look 5:
Lastly, another smart casual look, wearing the polo with a pair of white or cream trousers. It’s simple and very much a case of less is more. The key to getting this look right is by choosing trousers that are a slightly different shade to the polo.

Coach Polo in Navy
Our extra-long staple cotton coach polo in navy is a classic, muted shade that doesn’t require a great degree of effort to wear and style. For some of us, this will be the preferable option because the nature of darker styles mean they can be easier to care for in terms of stains or marks.
Look 1:
Again, we start the first look off by illustrating how easily a polo can be worn as formal wear by pairing it with another blazer. We find this particular shade of navy works nicely with green, but that doesn’t mean other colours are off limits. Given the plain texture of the polo shirt, a blazer with some texture is the preferred option here.
Again, we’ve used our Tennis Polo to demonstrate styling options available to you with a navy colourway in the following two looks.
Look 2:
With a pair of white jeans and a denim jacket, our second look makes for ideal weekend wear that looks well put together but is still comfortable and accessible. Denim possesses a certain rugged texture that contrasts well with the smooth texture of the polo’s cotton, giving the outfit a little more depth.

Look 3:
Our third look moves a little further along the formality scale, but would still be considered smart casual. We’ve added a black linen blazer and light blue jeans. Darker shades of navy, such as this one, work well with black while the lighter colour of the jeans also complements the navy. To tie the look together, you’ll spot we’ve accessorised with black and white bandana placed just under the collar of the polo.
We hope that our styling tips and the accompanying photos have been able to highlight the polo shirt’s versatility and provide some inspiration too.
