Features

Our cashmere wool captain's funnel neck sweater is inspired by the thick sweaters worn by captains of naval ships in the past. It is designed with a funnel neck and a heavy, dense knitted fabric - features that are typical of captain’s jumpers because they needed to keep warm.

It is made using a blend of 45% cashmere and 55% slub wool. Slub wool is produced with a special method which creates an uneven surface on the fabric. We chose to use this yarn because it emulates the slubby effect on naval captain’s jumpers that have been worn at sea for a long time. However, we have included 45% cashmere in the material, making the sweater soft to the touch.

If you look closely at the fabric, you can see that the yarn consists of a melange of two slightly different shades; the first colourway consists of a mix of charcoal and light grey, the second colourway consists of a mix of dark navy and blue. This rich depth of colour helps to further bring out the unique texture of the sweater.

Fit

Please see size chart at the bottom of the page to determine which size is best for you. Other aspects:

  • This style fits true to size. We recommend that you take your usual size
  • Slightly more roomy fit than other garments in our range with a wider shoulder, to emulate the relaxed fit of naval captain's sweaters which was needed to allow ease of movement on board
  • Funnel neck that rises up to just below the chin to help keep the chill out whilst allowing plenty of movement and air through for comfort - inspired by the funnel neck feature of captain's naval sweaters

As Worn

Model wears size 38/S. He measures: chest circumference 38" (96.5cm); height 6"2 (188cm).

Unrivalled Quality

We are confident in bringing you the world's finest knitwear because we only use the very best at every stage of manufacture:

Quality of fibre: 45% cashmere from fibres of the highest quality sourced from inner Mongolia. Fibre diameter is c. 15.5 microns and length is c. 38mm, making the fibre the world's finest and longest, which means the softest and most durable

The 55% slub wool used is superfine lambswool that is from the same source as our classic superfine lambswool garments except that it has been produced using a special technique that creates a slubby texture on the surface. The superfine lambswool fibres are around 18.5 microns in diameter, making this the world's finest, and therefore softest lambswool.

Quality of yarn: a special blend of 45% cashmere and 55% slub wool yarn especially developed and produced by spinners Todd & Duncan at their Loch Leven Mill in Kinross, Scotland, industry heavyweights who have been spinning yarn for 150 years - world renowned for their consistently high quality and strong yarns.

Quality of knit
: knitted, hand-finished and washed by fourth generation heritage knitwear specialists in Hawick, the Scottish Borders, a region whose expertise in the trade is without compare. Garments are knitted tightly to minimise gaps and to ensure longevity.

Quality of finish: there is a high degree of hand-finishing. The sweater is "fully-fashioned", as signified by the faint-dotted lines along the sleeve-head of the jumper. This makes the garment more well fitted, much like a bespoke suit. Individual pieces of the sweater are “hand-linked” - a meticulous process by which each tiny knit-loop at the end of each piece of the sweater is linked together by hand, ensuring the seams are the straightest and strongest.

Quality of wash: the finished product is carefully washed in pure Scottish waters with the precise balance of minerals, so that the garment is given its famous soft handle without compromising the integrity of the fibres. Scottish knitwear may feel a little stiff to begin with but will soften naturally with age.

Size Guide

This style fits true to size. We suggest taking your usual size. The measurements of the garment are set out below. To ensure you have the correct size, you may wish to take a measuring tape to one of your existing jumpers with the best fit and compare measurements. Measurements are approximate, but any variance is minimal and will not impact overall fit given that knitwear has stretch.
