Our sea island cotton ivy t-shirt is inspired by the Ivy League t-shirts from the 50s and 60s - cut with a boxy, slightly more generous fit, and a close neckline for a neat look. Perhaps aptly, and in homage to the t-shirt design's American heritage, it is made using sea island cotton grown in the USA, the world’s finest and rarest cotton variety with a superior hand feel and strength than even the next most luxurious cotton fibre such as suvin, superfine supima and the like.

It’s woven in a mid weight cloth, so that whilst it has a luxuriously soft hand feel, there is also a certain “heft” to it, a sense of substance that instantly tells you, this garment is going to last a very long time, the kind of material that has come to typify the Colhay’s garment profile.

Quality of fabric: 100% American Sea Island Cotton. Sea island cotton is the world's most luxurious cotton fibre, due to its superior length and fineness. There truly is no comparison, and it is becoming a rarer fibre each year, with only a very small amount cultivated. Our t-shirt is made using sea island cotton grown in the USA. It is this rarity that makes this fibre a significantly more expensive fibre to get hold of, and those that do, take extra care to craft garments that last a long time, knowing that they are handling a material that is extraordinarily precious and not easily produced.

Quality of woven fabric: once the fibres have been collected from the US, they are then woven in Japan to create an incredibly smooth fabric with a fine weave and firm hand feel. It is then mercerised, to give the fabric an even more luxuriously soft hand feel.

Quality of make: assembled by a garment maker in Japan that has been crafting the finest shirts for several decades. This means Like many Japanese garment makers, they champion heritage European techniques and take them to the next level. Their commitment to precision, especially in the area of fit, is second to none. They are known to be dedicated to refining the smallest of details to improve comfort for the wearer, above and beyond that of an ordinary garment maker.

Please note: sea island cotton is an extremely luxurious and fine material. Please handle with care when wearing and washing. 

Washing:

Cold machine wash at or below 30 degrees celsius only. 

When washing in the washing machine, we recommend putting the t-shirt in a wash bag to help minimise the risk of damage to the buttons, stitching and fabric. 

Use a low spin cycle, as aggressive spinning could cause damage. 

Wash dark colours separately from white or light colours as colour transfer may occur when washing. 

Do not use fluorescent brightener.

After wash:

Dry flat away from direct sunlight, ensuring there are no sharp edges or creases when garment is still wet. 

As with all cotton products, ironing on high heat runs the risk of fabric shrinkage and shining.

If you have to iron, we recommend using the lowest heat setting, use ironing cloth to act as barrier between fabric and iron and use a well padded ironing board. Although there is still no guarantee that shrinkage and/or shining will not occur, these steps would help minimise the risk.
