How To Store Your Knitwear
Storing your knitwear with care means more than just tucking it away somewhere. It's about preserving the comfort and style that you will want to return to season after season. Without the right care, your knitwear can lose shape, pill excessively or even fall victim to mould or moths. But keeping your knitwear in great condition is easier than you think. With these simple but necessary steps, you can extend the life of your favourite garments for years.
1. Clean Before You Store
One of the cardinal rules of knitwear storage is to never put away your knit garments without giving them a proper wash or dry clean first. Especially if they are being stored away for the end of the season. Dirt, oils and sweat trapped in the fibres can attract pests and cause discolouration over time. Be sure to follow the instructions on the care label meticulously - or head to the Garment Care section of our website which has a breakdown of the correct way to care for your knitwear. Ensuring your knitwear is spotless before storage sets the foundation for long-term preservation.
2. Avoid Hanging
Knitwear, especially heavy sweaters, must never be hung on hangers. The weight pulls down on the fibres, causing the fabric to stretch and leading to misshapen shoulders and sagging sleeves. Even if your knits have a hanger loop, it's still best to avoid hanging them because the fabric can still stretch or lose shape over time. Instead, fold your knitwear delicately in order to maintain its natural shape. Place the garment flat and fold neatly along the natural seams such as the shoulders and sides. This avoids any stretch or distortion.
3. Choose Breathable Storage Containers
Where you store your knitwear matters just as much as how you store it. Avoid packing in plastic bags or airtight containers that trap moisture, unless you ensure that there is no moisture at all before packing away, as this can lead to mould or unpleasant odours. You can opt for breathable fabric storage bags or cotton storage bins that allow airflow. Cedarwood boxes or sachets are also excellent choices since cedar naturally repels moths and keeps your garments smelling fresh. The risk of this though is that because the bag you use is open weave, persistent moths could still get through.
Alternatively, you can keep knitwear in ziplock plastic bags - this will ensure that you keep moths out but before doing so, you must ensure that there is no mud, dirt or moisture, as any such residue on the garment creates the perfect breeding ground for mould in airtight conditions.
4. Store in a Dry, Cool Place
Temperature and humidity control are crucial. Avoid storing your knitwear in damp basements or overly warm attics where moisture and heat can damage the natural fibres. A dry, cool closet or linen drawer is ideal. If humidity is a concern, consider using silica gel packets or moisture absorbers to maintain a balanced environment to protect your knits.
5. Protect Against Pests
Moths and other garment-eating insects are notorious for damaging wool and cashmere. In addition to using cedar sachets, it is essential to regularly inspect your storage space and wardrobe for signs of infestation. And, as mentioned above, washing and airing out your knitwear before storing can further reduce risk.
6. Rotate and Air Out Frequently
Last but certainly not least, when storing away your knitwear for a few months, it's a good idea to bring them out every now and then, air them out and refold. This prevents lasting creases and keeps the fibres fresh. This simple step keeps the texture, quality and softness of the knit intact and helps you detect storage issues (such as mould, dust, discolouration) at an early stage.
By taking the time to store your knitwear properly, you're not only protecting each piece but also maintaining the warmth, texture and craftsmanship that makes the piece special. Keeping them as fresh and brand new as the day you bought them.
